Ireland at the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad in Cluj, Romania

The Irish team has arrived home from the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, where they enjoyed two weeks full-packed with intense training, competition, new friendships, hiking and exploration, and yummy treats.

Lucas Bachmann won Ireland’s 10th-ever Bronze medal in the competition since Ireland’s first participation in 1988. Lucas is a 5th-year student at Glenstal Abbey School, Murroe, Co. Limerick. Lucas continues Irelands' success after last year's double bronze medals in Rio de Janeiro. In addition, Anna Mustata, a Leaving Certificate student at Bishopstown Community School, Cork, and IMO 2017 bronze medalist, finished IMO2018 with an ‘Honourable Mention’.

This year's Irish team was made up of: Anna Mustata (Bishopstown Community School, Cork); Lucas Bachmann (Glenstal Abbey School, Murroe, Co. Limerick); Tianyiwa Xie (Alexandra College, Milltown Road, Dublin 6); Seán Fitzgerald (Castletroy College, Limerick); Nicholas Pochinkov (St Gerard's, Bray, Co. Wicklow); and, Vlad-Florian Lica (Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School, Tralee, Co. Kerry).
